This Week: PTA Meeting… Day in the Life of a Claremont Student

Claremont students finished off the school week last week in Halloween celebrations.  Many thanks to the parents and teachers who helped treat our students to food, candy and games.   The fun continues tonight in your neighborhoods.  Happy Halloween!

This weekend, a team of Claremont students braved the rain, wind and cold to run the MCM Fun Run at the Pentagon.  Despite the miserable conditions, our Claremont students crossed the finish line with smiles on their faces.  Go Claremont!

Parents are encouraged to stop by the P TA Meeting Tuesday night in the library at 7 p.m.  Special guest Gunston Principal Margaret Gill will talk about Gunston and preparing our students for the middle school years.   Translation and babysitting is available.  Please come!

Thursday our students have a chance to play teacher at our “Day in the Life of a Claremont Student” event.  Come to Claremont between 6 – 8 p.m. and your student can take you on a tour of his or her day.  Students love the chance to show off their classrooms to their family.  Teachers enjoy highlighting your child’s work!  It’s a fun night.  Please come!

Permission slips will go out this week for Odyssey of the Mind.  If your child is a budding scientist or performer, this team may be a good fit.   Teams will form soon.  The contest will be held in late March.

Odyssey of the Mind/Odisea de la Mente Meeting tonight at 6 p.m.

The leaves are turning and starting to fall so….it must be time for Odyssey of the Mind. Teams are now forming. We will hold an informational meeting (with sign up included) on Wednesday October 26, 2011 at 6pm in the library for you and your interested student. Below is an excerpt from the Odyssey of the Mind web site.

Why Odyssey of the Mind is Good for Kids

The Odyssey of the Mind teaches students to learn creative problem-solving methods while having fun in the process. For more than twenty five years, this unique program has helped teachers generate excitement in their students. By tapping into creativity, and through encouraging imaginative paths to problem-solving, students learn skills that will provide them with the ability to solve problems — great and small — for a lifetime. The Odyssey of the Mind teaches students how to think divergently by providing open-ended problems that appeal to a wide range of interests. Students learn how to identify challenges and to think creatively to solve those problems. They are free to express their ideas and suggestions without fear of criticism. The creative problem-solving process rewards thinking “outside of the box.” While conventional thinking has an important place in a well-rounded education, students need to learn how to think creatively and productively.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Cindy at cindymacrd@gmail.com or Ofelia McKenzie  through Claremont.

Fall Fun Fest Fun and Reflections deadline.

Fall Fun Fest 2011 was a success.  Claremont students jammed to the dj, dove into the chili bar  and got spooked in the haunted house.  The festivities were also a boon to the fifth graders.  They raised $310 in the cakewalk for their end of the year celebration.  Way to go 5th grade!

Tonight, the PTA Homeroom Parents Committee is meeting in the library from 6pm – 7pm to discuss plans for the year.  Babysitting and translation is provided.

Entries for the PTA Reflections contest are due this Friday.  This year’s theme is “diversity means…” Students can express their ideas on the theme through visual art, writing, film, dance, music and photography.  Turn in those entries!

Welcome back students from a long weekend!

Our Sally Foster / Entertainment Book totals are coming in… and we’re pleased to announce that Claremont students brought in more than $16,000 in sales!  At a 50% profit, that means a profit of $8,000 for PTA activities.  Great job students!  Way to go!

Thank you to the 3rd and 4th grade classes for treating the teachers to a breakfast and lunch during the conferences on Thursday and Friday.  The food was wonderful and our hard-working teachers really appreciated it.

Thank you to the parents and teachers who attended the Parent-Teacher Social last Thursday.  Turnout was great and it gave Claremont adults a little chance to unwind.  Thank you to Hard Times Cafe for helping to sponsor the event.  Thank you also to the babysitters who helped Claremont students enjoy a Thursday night social of their own!

There’s more fun on the calendar this week, as the PTA hosts Claremont’s Fall Fun Fest on Friday.  There will be music, games, a moonbounce, a spooktacular haunted house and the famous Cakewalk!  The cost is $5 per child, parents are free.  The fun starts at 6 p.m.  Be there!

This Week: Parent-Teacher Conferences and Social

A change in the calendar also brought a change in the weather this week. Brrrr!

But that won’t stop our Claremont students from having fun. Students involved in after-school enrichment activities got off to a good start last week.  Actors are coming up with characters, cartoonists are developing comic books, the Spanish, English and math students are working on homework and building their skills and the chess masters are conjuring up new moves to reach checkmate!

Last month, we had nearly record-breaking attendance at the PTA meeting. The PTA meets again Tuesday night at 7 p.m.  Come beat last month’s attendance record. Childcare and Spanish translation is available. Please come and make your voices heard!

This week will be a short week, with Parent-Teacher conferences on Thursday and Friday. Students will also be off on Monday for Columbus Day. The third grade and fourth grade classes will be honoring the teachers and staff during the conferences by supplying a breakfast and lunch. Thank you third and fourth grade in advance!

Finally, do you ever feel like your children are having all the fun in elementary school? Thursday night, October 6, is a chance to change all that. The PTA is sponsoring a Parent-Teacher Social at Hard Times Cafe in Clarendon. Parents, teachers and staff, come mix it up from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Hard Times, located at 3100 Wilson Blvd.  Childcare is available at Claremont.
